A native of Taiwan, Pi-hsien Chen studied at the Cologne College of Music and with Hans Leygraf in Hanover. She received important impulses at courses with Tatjana Nikolajewa, Geza Anda, Wilhelm Kempff, and Claudio Arrau. Her international concert activities began following a first prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Pi-hsien Chen has appeared with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and with nearly all the German radio symphony orchestras under conductors such as Bernhard Haitink, Paul Sacher, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, Marek Janowsky, Hans Zender, Edmond de Stoutz, and Peter Eötvös. Besides her activities as a soloist, she is a coveted chamber music partner. Her interest in and engagement for contemporary music is documented by collaborations with composers such as Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Elliott Carter, York Höller, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. As a sought-after interpreter of the repertoire from Bach and Scarlatti up to the contemporary avant-garde, she has participated in all important international music festivals. He discography includes recordings of works by Bach, Baraqué, Cage, Boulez, and Messiaen on the Sony Classics, ITM, CFM, und hat(now)ART labels. From 1983 to 2004 Pi-hsien Chen was Professor of Piano at the Cologne College of Music. Since summer semester 2004, she has been on the faculty of the Freiburg College of Music, additionally teaching at the Institute for New Music and Music Education as well as at the International Vacation Courses for New Music in Darmstadt. Pi-hsien Chen has also received awards at the International Arnold Schoenberg Competition in Rotterdam and the International J.S. Bach Competition in Washington D.C.
